Darren Stevens hits record one-day score as Kent Spitfires lose to Glamorgan in Royal London One-Day Cup

18:30, 14 May 2017

Darren Stevens hit Kent's highest individual limited overs score but it was still not enough to prevent defeat to Glamorgan in their Royal London One-Day Cup game at Swansea.

The experienced Kent all-rounder marked his 300th List A appearance by smashing a career-best 147 but the Spitfires fell 16 runs short of victory after a poor bowling performance had enabled their hosts to reach 356-7.

Stevens, 41, raced to his seventh List A century from just 48 deliveries and by the time he was fifth out in the 33rd over, he had faced 67 balls, and hit 10 fours and 14 sixes - only two less maximums than Glamorgan had managed in their entire innings.

The right-hander's knock beat his previous List A career best of 133 and also surpassed Kent's previous limited overs best of 146 scored by Andrew Symonds against Lancashire at Tunbridge Wells in 2004.

After being asked to bat Glamorgan lost both openers with the score on 39 (David Lloyd 32), but Colin Ingram (114) and Will Bragg (94) then started to put the Kent bowlers to the sword, adding 212 in a stand which spanned 31.4 overs.

Ingram scored his his runs from 98 balls with six boundaries and eight sixes, while Bragg faced 101 deliveries and found the boundary rope 11 times.

Chris Cooke weighed in with 33 from 21 balls with Andrew Salter finishing undefeated on 29, which came from just nine balls with two fours and a six.

Matt Coles was easily the pick of the Kent attack, taking 2-32 from nine overs and bowling his side's only maiden while spinner James Tredwell got through his 10 overs for 56.

Stevens took 1-43 from six overs but the other seamers all proved expensive. Ivan Thomas finished with 2-74 from eight overs, while Calum Haggett took 2-82 from 10 but Charlie Hartley finished wicketless and conceded 68 from his seven over-stint.

Kent's openers replied with a stand of 41 which ended when Daniel Bell-Drummond went for 17, and Joe Denly (41) and skipper Sam Northeast (14) both then fell in the same Lloyd over, leaving the visitors 76-3.

Enter Stevens who dominated a fourth wicket stand of 131 with Sam Billings, whose 24 occupied 41 balls and featured just one boundary.

Billings was superbly caught at deep square by Marchant de Lange and and it was he who also ended Stevens' heroics when he holed out off Lloyd (5-53 off 10).

Blake (6) became Lloyd's fourth victim when he departed just four runs later but Kent continued the chase, led by Coles who made 26 from 18 balls with a four and three sixes before being run out by a direct hit by Salter from point.

Hartley was ninth out at 311 but Tredwell's 28 from 22 balls with two fours and two sixes kept the home side on their toes until he was run out in the 48th over by wicketkeeper Cooke with the score on 341.

The defeat was Kent's sixth in seven South Group games, leaving them rooted to the bottom with just the match against Essex at the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence to come on Wednesday.
