Canterbury City boss Clive Cook gives update on Folkestone Invicta goalkeeper Henry Newcombe
06:00, 24 October 2019
Canterbury City boss Clive Cook is set for talks with Folkestone Invicta manager Neil Cugley over the future of Henry Newcombe.
The goalkeeper filled in for City in their 3-0 win over Hollands and Blair after signing on dual registration in the absence of Joe Mant, who represented England at the six-a-side World Cup in Greece.
Newcombe has since impressed for Folkestone amid Tim Roberts' absence, sparking high praise from Cugley.
Cook said: "He's played really well since Tim Roberts has gone away so I'm still having a discussion with Neil to see where we land with it.
"Joe Mant was away and Henry did really well to be fair.
"I can have him when Neil doesn't want him, I'll probably speak to Neil today, he might want to keep him because he's been playing well lately.
"It's the same situation I would have with Henry and Manty that Neil has got with Tim and Henry.
"He's a good lad, I've got to see how Manty comes back from the 6-a-side World Cup."
Cook is meanwhile still looking to add to his outfield options and is hoping for new faces at training today.
He added: "I've got a few signings lined up, there's a few I'm talking to and they're coming to training.
"We're hoping to get them over the line, it's all about strengthening the squad."
Canterbury, who currently sit fourth, return to action in the Southern Counties East Premier Division this Saturday when they host league leaders Beckenham.
"They're the form side and probably as big a team that will come our way," said Cook.
"If we play like I know we can and give ourselves a good representation of ourselves I feel we will hold our own.
"Christmas is the marker to see where you are and what you've got to do.
"I've been around long enough to know titles don't get won in October or November, especially in this league when everybody can beat everybody.
"We have trained hard, the boys are raring to go."
Defender Ben Wilson looks set to be the only player unavailable at the weekend.
