Kent’s Matt Walker is unconvinced over the chances of home-grown coaches being used in The Hundred tournament.

Walker has spoken openly in the past about his interest in contributing to the new format, which is scheduled to get under way in 2020.

He is so far unaware of any talks over how the eight city-based sides will be coached as the October player draft edges closer.

“It (the discussion over coaching) may well have progressed behind the scenes, but I don’t know,” admitted Kent head coach Walker.

“Initially, in the early stages of hearing about The Hundred it sounded like they were keen to use English coaches from top to bottom and give them as much an opportunity in this format as the players – I think that was exciting, actually.

“What I understand now is there is going to be quite an influx of overseas headline acts coming in to be head coaches, which is what it is.

“I can understand why that’s happening, they want to raise the profile of it and throw everything at it. I suppose bringing in the big names is going to attract more interest.

“It’s a little disappointing I think for English coaches who may have thought there would be an opportunity to throw themselves into this format and really challenge themselves and be part of this new venture.

“I imagine it will be the same names that come in and do the hundred ball that have been doing these franchise gigs around the world.”

Kent will join forces with Surrey to create a team based out of The Oval, the name of which is yet to be confirmed.

While intrigued by what the 100-ball tournament has to offer, Walker insists his focus remains on Kent.

He added: “Whether there are other opportunities as assistant coaches further down the line I don’t know.

“I’m certainly not going to lose any sleep over it, I’ve got a big job on my hands looking after Kent and what will be will be.

“I’ve definitely made no secret that I would be interested in doing it. I suppose time is ticking on this format and everybody is aware of that.

“I think at some stage in the near future they’re going to have to work out the coaches that will be involved as it’s going to take plenty of time to work out who you’re going to pick in the draft.

“Like a lot of these things the finer details are a bit blurry.”
