Kent duo Joe Denly and Zak Crawley have been named in the England squad to tour South Africa this winter.

The pair have retained their places in a 17-man squad after being part of the team which has just lost 1-0 in New Zealand.

Crawley, 21, made his debut in the second Test, which ended in a draw at Hamilton. He batted just once, making one.

Denly, 33, has 10 Test caps and currently averages 30 with five half-centuries.

He made 74 and 35 in the first Test against New Zealand as England lost by an innings at the Bay Oval.

England have recalled James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow and Mark Wood for the four-Test series which starts this month.

Seamer Anderson has not played for England since suffering a calf injury in the first Ashes Test in August while wicketkeeper-batsman Bairstow was dropped for the New Zealand series.

Pace bowler Mark Wood has been ruled out since England's World Cup win in July due to side and knee injuries.

The uncapped Saqib Mahmood is the only member of the squad named for New Zealand not to be included for the South African leg.

Moeen Ali, who took a break from Test cricket after being dropped during the Ashes, remains unavailable.

The first Test starts in Centurion on Boxing Day.

England will also play three one-day internationals and three Twenty20s in South Africa.

England Test squad for South Africa tour: Joe Root (captain), James Anderson, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Zak Crawley, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Jack Leach, Matthew Parkinson, Ollie Pope , Dom Sibley, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.
