Kent lose to Glamorgan by five wickets in final Specsavers County Championship Division 2 match

16:00, 27 September 2017

Kent's season ended on a low note at the Spitfire Ground St Lawrence as they were beaten by Glamorgan in their final Specsavers County Championship Division 2 game.

Sam Northeast's side were dismissed in their second innings for a season's low total of 115 - a scorecard which featured five ducks - and the visitors then chased down their target of 189 with five wickets and a day to spare.

It was a hugely disappointing way to end the season for Kent who won four of their opening five matches but then failed to record another victory from the remaining nine.

Joe Denly's superb 152 - which took him past 10,000 First-Class runs - had lit up the opening day as Kent recovered from 127-6 to reach 302 all out (Michael Hogan 4-44).

Denly's fourth championship hundred of the season, and his 23rd in First-Class cricket, featured 23 fours and two sixes and he shared half-century stands with Zak Crawley (37) and Adam Milne (33).

Glamorgan were reduced to 65-5 in reply but led by Chris Cooke (49), Craig Meschede (44) and Ruaidhri Smith (36) they rallied to reach 229.

Calum Haggett finished with 3-40 from 15 overs and there were two wickets apiece for Milne, Darren Stevens and 23-year-old debutant Grant Stewart.

Leading by 73 Kent collapsed to 24-4 second time round with Denly and Northeast falling in successive balls to Hogan, both without scoring.

By the close of the second day Kent had limped to 98-6 with Adam Rouse - summoned from the golf course after Sam Billings' 11th hour call-up to the England ODI team - unbeaten on 34.

However on the final morning Rouse added just 10 more to his tally as Kent's last four wickets fell for nine runs.

Australian Hogan again impressed, going to 500 First-Class wickets on the way to figures of 6-43 which gave him a career-best match return of 10-87.

Glamorgan openers Nick Selman and Connor Brown added 96 before Haggett made the breakthrough by dismissing the latter for 33.

Stevens (3-53) then accounted for Selman (70) and Kiran Carlson (0) in successive balls and also snared Jack Murphy (21) to give him a career-best season's haul of 62 First-Class wickets.

Imran Qayyum caught and bowled Cooke to make it 153-5 but Graham Lloyd (35 not out) and Andrew Salter (17 not out) saw the Welshmen home for their third win of the campaign.
