Kent's LV=County Championship promotion hopes suffered a big setback when they slipped to a 196-run defeat to Division 2 title hopefuls Hampshire at Canterbury.

Chasing a hugely improbable target of 501 in the last innings Kent started the final day on 95-2 and were bowled out for 304, leaving them in fifth spot, 41 points behind Hampshire, who occupy the second promotion spot.

Opener Daniel-Drummond, 43 not out overnight, only added a single before he was dismissed by former clubmate Matt Coles (3-68), and the home side were 191-6 before Darren Stevens and Sam Billings (21) added 63.

Stevens went on to top score with 74, from 81 balls with seven fours and four sixes, but despite a championship-best unbeaten 33 from last man Doug Bollinger, Kent were dismissed an hour or so after lunch.

After electing to bat on day one Hampshire slumped to 218-6 (Will Smith 56) before Sean Ervine (75) and Chris Wood (61) added 124, enabling the visitors to reach 380 all out on the second day.

Bollinger, Mitch Claydon and Adam Riley each took three wickets for Kent while wicketkeeper Sam Billings held six catches.

Kent were reduced to 64-4 in reply and although Stevens (64) and Sam Northeast (46) added 85 the hosts were all out for 191, as left-arm seamer Wood claimed 5-39.

With a lead of 189 Hampshire accumulated steadily in their second innings, led by openers Michael Carberry (81) and Jimmy Adams (97) who added 179. Smith added his second half-century of the match with 74 and with James Vince weighing in with 38, they declared on 311-5.

Fabian Cowdrey was Kent's most successful bowler, claiming championship-best figures of 3-59.
