Women's Ashes 2019: Kent captain Tammy Beaumont poised for special Canterbury appearance
06:00, 06 July 2019
Kent women’s captain Tammy Beaumont is gearing up for a memorable union of club and country on Sunday.
The opening batter is set to feature for England at Canterbury’s Spitfire Ground in their third Ashes ODI match against Australia.
Beaumont returns to St Lawrence having hit 105 there during England women’s 2-1 series win over South Africa in June 2018.
“Obviously I have lots of really fond memories of playing down at Canterbury or going to watch as a kid so it’s always nice to get to play there,” said Beaumont.
“We had the England game there last year against South Africa and scoring a hundred on my home ground was amazing.
“It certainly is a special moment for family and friends. There’s a lot of nostalgia going to the ground and having that link back with Kent is really good.”
Despite entering the Ashes with 128 caps to her name, Beaumont insists the feeling of being called up by her country never changes.
She added: “It’s certainly always special, getting that phone call to know you’re going to be putting on an England shirt is always a really proud moment.”
The 28-year-old made just 16 as England lost the opening ODI to Australia by two wickets at Leicester on Tuesday.
Laura Marsh (24 not out) helped England recover to 177 after they were 19-4 at one stage. Marsh then took 2-31 with the ball but Australia, despite a few nervy moments, reached 178-8 with more than seven overs to spare.
Beaumont followed this up on Thursday with 114 from 115 balls, only for England to collapse to 217 all out as they lost the second ODI by four wickets.
They now trail 4-0 in the multi-format Women's Ashes heading into Sunday's clash.
