Canterbury City boss Clive Cook admits Saturday’s 2-0 win over Corinthian marked one of his side’s most impressive displays of the season so far.

A Matt Day brace saw City record their third league win of the campaign and their second in as many games to rise to second in the Southern Counties East.

Having urged his side to make amends for slow starts in recent weeks, Cook saw his players take control early on.

Cook said: “It was very comfortable and a very good performance. It was probably one of our best performances, especially in the first half.

“It keeps turning round, sometimes we’re starting well and the next week we aren’t.

“This week we started well and all round I was very pleased with the performance on the day, the whole outlook to the game, the game management and the way we started and finished.

“We could have been out of sight in the first half, we missed a couple of chances. We worked hard and was relentless really, against a good side.

“Their chances were few and far between. The concentration levels were good, sometimes when you aren't under pressure you tend to switch off but they kept their concentration.”

Two more goals took Day’s tally to four for the season, with he and team-mate Dean Grant having built a useful partnership up top.

Cook added: “He works hard, he’s a good striker and has been playing well. They (Day and Grant) are a handful for anyone.”

While refusing to get ahead of himself, Cook admits there are signs of his new-look team beginning to find their feet.

“There are parts of our game which are looking very good but there are still parts we're looking to work on, that's football in general,” he said.

“Considering we started with nothing, with how they've gelled together I feel like they seem like a side that have been together for two seasons.

“We've got to go through horrible patches in the season as well when it's cold, wet and icy, we'll see how we tackle those situations.

“We'll take it game by game, it's still early days at the minute and there will be twists, but we're growing in strength as a team and that's important.”

Canterbury head into Saturday’s clash at Bearsted without midfielder Robbie Dolan, as well as new arrivals Sid Sollis and James Morrish – the latter of whom is still out with a back problem.

Cook said: “We’re playing a friendly against Folkestone next week, that will give James and Sid a full 90 minutes to try and get their fitness up.”
