Kent are continuing their search for a specialist batting coach but the club have confirmed Jonathan Trott is not in the running.

The former Warwickshire and England batsman worked with Kent in the summer, but did not put his hat into the ring for the batting job, which was introduced as part of a coaching re-structure when assistant Allan Donald’s departure was announced in August.

Trott, 38, initially joined Kent to work with them ahead of their Royal London One-Day campaign, and then stayed on until the start of the Vitality Blast campaign in July.

Head coach Matt Walker said: “We’re still looking, we want to get the right person.

“We had some applicants to start with but we haven’t felt we’ve quite seen the right fit yet.

“Jon did not apply for it, I think the relocation’s a problem.

“He’s got a young family in Birmingham but what he did say is that if we were without one he would be happy to do a similar role to last season so that was good to know.

“I really enjoyed what he did last year. It’s not easy just coming into a group, not really having time to bed in through pre-season.

“He came in cold but he did a really good job.

“The players got him really quite quickly, he’s got so much experience, he’s got a good way about him, quite forthright which I think helped in some cases with some of our players

“I think he’s going to have a really good coaching career in the future.”

Walker confirmed Kent have spoken to a number of candidates.

He added: “We sifted a lot, we’ve got two or three in mind so now we’ve just got to try and work out the finer details of it all.

“The trouble is, none of these applicants are local, most of them were not domestic based, but from all over the world, a lot from South Africa.

“I think it’s important that, as much as we need a batting coach it’s about getting the right person, that will add to what we’ve got already.

“There is no time scale but ideally we’ll have someone before the start of the season. Ideally we’ll have one tomorrow but it’s not going to happen that quickly unfortunately.

“People move on quite quickly from those roles and there are reasons for that but we want to get the right man, we’ve been good at that.

“It’s something I’m very proud of over the past two or three years, we’ve recruited brilliantly and it goes for the coaching staff as well.”
