Tag rugby success for St Stephens
00:00, 12 June 2003
THE Canterbury district tag rugby festival saw 27 teams from both junior and special schools competing at the city' rugby club for the right to represent the district in the county finals.
Tags are worn by all players and constitute a tackle if removed. Teams have to include girls and boys and all the schools have been training in recent months to learn the rules of the game and to improve their passing and teamwork.
President of Kent RFU, John Carley, presented the awards to all schools and players. The winners of the junior schools competition were St Stephens who will take their place at the final in Aylesham at the end of June.
Wingham were a close second and will be invited to take part in the Kent Games. In third place were Wincheap who put up a strong showing on the day and who will be a force to reckoned with next year.
St Mary's Whitstable were awarded the Fair Play trophy for excellent spirit among their players and will be invited to the regional finals.
The Special Schools competition saw Bradfields from Chatham winning with some strong running and support work, with Heath Farm School from Charing second and Orchard School from Canterbury in third place. These schools will be invited to the county finals.
