Kent and England spinner James Tredwell says he hopes the saga surrounding his former teammate Kevin Pietersen is over once and for all - though he doubts that will be the case.

The 33-year-old has played 45 ODIs and two Tests for England, the first of which, against Bangladesh in Dhaka in 2010, saw him named in the same side as Pietersen, who held a catch which gave the Kent bowler one of his six wickets on debut.

However Pietersen's fallout with the ECB establishment and the long-running saga over a potential recall appeared to be ended on Tuesday as incoming Director of Cricket Andrew Strauss says 'trust issues' with the batsman mean he is not in their plans this summer - despite a career-best 355 not out for Surrey against Leicestershire at the Oval on Tuesday.

Tredwell admitted it was a ‘really difficult situation’ and admitted: “I’m glad I’m nothing to do with those decisions."

He added: "It’s been going on a long while now and hopefully this can be the end of it, one way or another, but I doubt that will be the case.

"The decision has been made for now, though the door hasn’t totally been shut, so we’ll see what happens from here I guess."

Pietersen has Kent roots of his own, speaking on a visit to Canterbury before Christmas, Pietersen said: "Mum was born here in Canterbury, so it’s got a spot in my heart.

“It’s always nice to come back here. I always think of mum when I come back.”

He also paid tribute to the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, where he last appeared for Surrey last July.

He said: "It’s an interesting ground. Everybody knows it around the world because of the tree in the outfield. I’ve got some fond memories. I’ve got some runs here. I’ve also got out for nothing here too. It’s a beautiful ground."
