Matt Walker says Kent Spitfires have no intention of making up the numbers when they begin their Royal London One-Day Cup campaign next week and he believes they can win the competition.
Kent begin their 50-over season with the visit to Canterbury of Durham on Tuesday (2pm) before a trip to Taunton on Thursday (10.30am) – a ground where they have already won this season against a Somerset side they beat twice in their unsuccessful NatWest T20 Blast campaign.
Despite having failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the T20 competition and being off the pace in LV= County Championship Division 2, assistant coach Walker insists Kent have a squad capable of challenging for silverware.
He admitted: “This competition, coming as late in the season as it does, can often be a bit of a grind after the Championship and T20 stuff.
“It’s a tough competition to qualify from and teams often have an eye on what’s going on in the other competitions.
“If you lose your first couple, you can find yourselves effectively out of it before you’ve even really begun.”
He added: “Our only goal is that we want to win the thing. “There is a Lord’s final at stake and we have a lot of talented one-day players who will be suited to this format – some are probably better suited to this competition than the others.
“In T20 we’re not blessed with the power-hitters that some teams have but this competition will give us the chance to build some good innings.”
