Assistant coach Matt Walker wants Kent to build on the momentum of the past week as the season begins to pick up pace.

The Spitfires secured the club’s first win in any format with a seven-run T20 success against Sussex Sharks at Canterbury on Friday and seek to get over the line in the final day of their Championship clash against Gloucestershire, skippered by Geraint Jones, at Bristol on Thursday.

Friday night’s trip to Hampshire in NatWest T20 Blast South Group is the first of a 10-day stretch when Kent have five games in two competitions and just two scheduled days off.

Walker said: “The games are coming thick and fast now and when you are winning, you just want to go onto the next.

“We go down to the Rose Bowl and want to pick up another win there. We’ve made a good start in T20 and want to build on it.

“We have to take it one at a time but then we have Beckenham which is going to be interesting, it’s generally a good wicket there.”

Walker admitted: “When you win a game it breeds confidence across the board, particularly when you do it in the way we did last Friday.

“We showed immense character, particularly seeing as we had not won a game, to get the win.

“The character and fight they showed to come back when it looked like the game was getting away from us was great to see.

“That win gave us a big lift and gives us some momentum to take forward.”

After Kent visit Southampton on Friday, Surrey make the short trip to Beckenham for an LV= County Championship Division 2 clash from Sunday (11am) and Walker added: “It’s important to get on a roll. If we are able to get a positive result at Bristol, then it will carry on to Friday at Hampshire and hopefully Sunday.”

Next Thursday sees the Spitfires head to Lord’s to face Middlesex, while they are back at Beckenham the following day to take on Surrey in another 20-over match.

Rob Key returned to action, hitting 33 for the 2nds against Surrey in Maidstone on Wednesday but any decision over his first-team return will be left to the skipper himself.

Walker said: “It’s in his hands. If he’s feeling ready, he’ll be back. He wanted to get some runs but who knows, he may not get them but still feel better and want to come back.

"He’s destroyed Surrey in previous years and I’m sure they will be more than happy if he’s not in the team.”
