Kent Cricket head coach Matt Walker to join up with England T20 squad in Australia
12:00, 27 September 2017
Kent Cricket head coach Matt Walker looks like he will be working with England in Australia this winter after all.
Reports in August suggested that Walker would be joining up with England for the T20 tri-series involving Australia and New Zealand in February.
But while the 43-year-old confirmed then that he had been approached to do some work with the national squad Down Under, he said that he had turned the offer down because of his Kent commitments.
However, the ECB named England's Ashes squad on Wednesday and at the same time announced that Walker would make the trip to assist with theTwenty20 tri-series in Australia and New Zealand.
The county are said to be lining up an overseas trip around that time - they went to the West Indies last winter- and speaking at the time of the speculation Walker had said: "I have been asked to do that, that's true but I'm unable to do it because of my commitments with Kent. It coincides with hopefully going abroad (with Kent).
"It's very flattering absolutely, I'm chuffed to bits (to be asked), it's a shame I can't do it, I would've loved to have been involved with England over that period but my priority is with Kent.
"You can't have your head coach not being around for the whole of that pre-season trip. It makes no sense to me so yes great to be asked, really honoured and hopefully another opportunity will arise in the future."
Walker spent time working with the England squad ahead of this summer's third Investec Test against South Africa at The Oval.
He has previously worked with England Lions in Potchefstroom, South Africa and in 2016 spent time with the senior squad during the home Test series against Sri Lanka.
