Richard Wallis called the shots to win the Kent PGA title - and in doing so clinched a county double for Canterbury Golf Club.

Wallis' win over Sian Evans (Wildernesse) and Zak Morgan (Rochester & Cobham) means Canterbury players have won both the professional and amateur county championships this year, following Dan Cooke’s Kent Amateur Championship triumph at North Foreland GC in June.

Canterbury’s senior teaching professional scored a five-under-par 65 for 41 Stableford points at the par-70 Sittingbourne & Milton Regis course on Tuesday, beating Evans and Morgan by one in a field of 20.

Wallis' round included an eagle at the par 5 after a 370 yards downhill drive second, five birdies and two bogeys in gusting, swirling winds.

He said: "The second is dogleg right par 5. I smoked my tee shot, hit a 50 degree gap wedge 131 yards to eight feet and holed it for an eagle.

"It was a nice way to start - par, eagle, birdie.

"I got it to five under when I birdied 10th and 12th, but then bogeyed a fiddly little hole up the hill and upwind on the 13th."

He birdied the par 4 17th to clinch the title and added: "I played very solid, I chipped and putted nicely and I’m really pleased with the win.

"It’s the county championship so it’s a very prestigious event which has been played since the 1800s but, since Covid, it has only been played over 18 holes instead of 36."
