Rower Freddie Allinson from Charing to compete for Great Britain at the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Belgium
00:00, 27 July 2017
Freddie Allinson is in Belgium this weekend rowing for Great Britain at the Coupe de la Jeunesse.
The 18-year-old has just finished his A Levels at The King’s School in Canterbury where he was captain of boats.
Allinson, from Charing, will row in the fours at Hazewinkel alongside Matt Hardy, Theo Darlow (both Molesey) and Michael Dalton (St George’s College).
The selection process for the under-18 crews began last September and only ended on July 11 after four days of residential trials at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham.
Last year, Allinson represented King’s in the eights at Henley and won the British Championships in a pair with schoolmate Harry Nichols, who is now at university.
Allinson and Nichols also won gold for England at the Home Nations International Regatta in Cardiff last July.
Allinson teamed up with Canterbury’s Wills Edgar at the National Schools Regatta at Eton Dorney in May and came away with a bronze medal.
The Coupe de la Jeunesse is a two-day competition which sees 12 European countries come together to battle it out over 13 events on each day.
Great Britain topped the leaderboard in Poznan, Poland, last year, winning 15 gold medals, seven silvers and two bronzes to finish 82 points clear at the top of the table.
