A daredevil gran has proven age is no boundary after whizzing down the country’s longest zip line.

Gwendolen Ackrill who lives in supported housing in Bevis Close, Stone, went parasailing in Turkey 10 years ago and always wanted to do another exhilarating activity.

The 91-year-old originally planned to ride the fastest zip line in the world known as Velocity, in North Wales, however, the timings did not work out.

She then came across one closer to home at Bluewater shopping centre, in Greenhithe, and after convincing her son-in-law Nevil to join her, she booked it.

Hangloose Adventure launched England’s longest zip line at the shopping centre in 2021.

Skywire is a 60mph, 725-metre zip line that runs from a 40-metre cliff.

Gwendolen’s family tried to talk her out of going ahead with it over fears for her safety but she was adamant.

Her daughter Susan Eames said: “I was very worried but the doctors said it was safe and it was up to her if she wanted to do it.

“I tried to talk her out of it for a long time but she wanted to go ahead with it.

“She does not have much fear. I was more worried for her than she was.”

On the day of her maiden “flight”, Gwendolen was hoisted up to the platform in her wheelchair and “flew like a bird” back down to safety last month.

Susan added: “At that age, what she has done is remarkable.

“It is inspiring I think for other, older people who maybe do not think they can do things like this anymore.

“If they feel they can, they can.”

Not only has Gwendolen ticked off part of her bucket list, but she has used the zip line to raise more than £700 for Diabetes UK.

She chose the charity after members of her family were recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and wanted to give something to help others.
