Drivers were at a standstill on the Dartford Crossing for up to an hour this afternoon.
Highways England said there had been no accidents, and the queue had been caused by sheer volume of traffic.
The spokesman said drivers can expect delays of up to 30 minutes.
Twitter account @traffic_update said there are emergency road-marking works ongoing at the A282 northbound Dartford Crossing.
This may be the cause of the congestion but it has not been confirmed by Highways England.
Reports of queues began at around 3.30pm, but problems were still being reported at 7pm.
