Bridge strengthening works will be taking place on a busy roundabout for the next five months.

Major work is being carried out at Junction 3 of the M25, at the Swanley Interchange, from Monday (June 17).

Between July and November last year, strengthening works took place on the roundabout’s east bridge to withstand predicted future traffic loads.

During this time, the existing steel strengthening plates, which were installed in the 1990s, were replaced.

Now, National Highways will be completing the works on the roundabout’s west bridge, which crosses over the A20.

It says strengthening the two bridges, which carry the road over the M20, is necessary to keep them safe and ensure they can withstand predicted future traffic loads.

The work is expected to last until early November and motorists have been told to allow extra time during their journeys and follow the diversion signposted.

As with last year’s work, there will be lane closures and a temporary steel safety barrier will be installed across the west bridge in between moving traffic and workers.

To start, repairs will be taking place in the right-hand side lane.

In late August, workers will move to the left-hand side lane and work there in September and October.

On Monday, June 17, and Tuesday, June 18, the western section of the roundabout, between the A20 westbound entry and eastbound exit slip roads, will be closed overnight between 10pm and 5am.

A diversion will be in place via the A20 westbound to the Crittalls Corner roundabout and return.

This will also be the diversion for around 20 future overnight closures.

The Swanley interchange connects the M25 with the M20 and provides a vital link between the Kent ports, London and the south east.

It also connects the country to local attractions such as Brands Hatch and the Kent Downs.
