Long queues formed on the M25 following a three-vehicle collision.
Two lanes were closed on the clockwise carriageway between junction 1A and junction 1B near the Dartford Crossing earlier this afternoon.
Police officers were called at around 12.45pm to reports of a crash involving a car and two lorries.
They attended the scene which was cleared by 2.40pm and all lanes reopened to traffic.
Despite this, there were still around eight miles of congestion on the approach with around 60 minutes of delays above average journey times.
National Highways warned drivers to allow extra time if travelling in the area.
At 7.20pm, traffic information provider Inrix said the long delays had finally cleared.
