A post mortem found the cause of death to be traumatic injury.

The inquest was adjourned until Monday, December 11 by assistant coroner Kate Thomas.

The accident happened at about 5.25pm on Monday, September 4. Five other people were injured.

One of the first on the scene was Tenterden councillor Harry Hickmott.

A volunteer at the Kent & East Sussex Railway (KESR), he had been at Bodiam Station and was travelling from the Sandhurst direction with colleagues when he came across the crash.

Cllr Hickmott, a former policeman, realised the victim had not survived and talked to the driver of the other vehicle, who was clutching his sides with what appeared to be seatbelt injuries.

The driver told him the group were on holiday from Surrey and had been staying in Bodiam.

Cllr Hickmott was travelling with Lyn Brocklebank, KESR station manager at Bodiam and Bradley Bottomley, Tenterden Station manager.

He and Bradley directed the traffic until police arrived.

He said: “The air ambulance doctor was incredible and the response from the emergency services amazing.

"There were six police cars, two paramedic cars, two ambulances and two fire engines there.

“That road is very winding and twisty and although there are arrows on the bend there have been quite a few accidents there.”
