A telecommunications company has been forced to make dozens of redundancies and plans to go into administration after HM Revenue and Customs announced its intention to take it to court.

True Telecom, based in Crossways Business Park, Dartford, told staff last week it will be cutting jobs from its sales and operation department.

The decision followed the issue of a petition to wind up the company by HMRC, which said it is owed money by the firm.

A hearing will take place next Monday at London’s High Court.

Director Mark Baines said the company will fight the case, adding: “We’ve had this issue a few times in the past.

"We’re looking to go into administration and are confident we can manage the company through that process. At the moment it’s business as usual.

“There have been job losses but I don’t think we’ll have to make any more.”

Mr Baines refused to state exactly how many jobs had been lost but confirmed it was dozens from a part of the company which at its peak employed 80 people.

The company – which works for around 8,000 small businesses in the UK and employs more than 100 staff – was fined £85,000 last month for making misleading calls, giving the impression staff were from BT Openreach and withholding numbers. over a two year period.

A total of 201 complaints were made to the Information Commissioner’s Office from people who had requested not to be contacted.

The firm, which sells packages for broadband and line rental, was launched in Maidstone in 2013 by friends Mr Baines and Stuart Griffiths.
