To say it was nice to win against Huddersfield on Monday night would be an understatement.
It was such a massive game, which not only ended Huddersfield’s long unbeaten record but reinforced our place at the top of the table and sent out a message to the rest of League 1.
And, of course, it’s always nice to score (pictured) – especially on your home debut!
It might not have been our best performance of the season, in terms of free-flowing football but we displayed guts and great determination.
The boys at the back in particular dug in but everyone played their part and I thought we deserved the points.
We did come under a bit of pressure at times, especially in the final 20 minutes but you have to expect that against a good side.
We’ve now got 46 points and are seven points clear at the top but as the manager keeps pointing out – and stop me if you’ve heard this before! – we haven’t achieved anything yet.
You need 86-90 points if you want to go up and we know the manager will keep on top of us.
I was promoted to the Premier League with QPR last season, so I’ve got a bit of experience with promotion bids but some of the boys haven’t been in this position before.
It’s all about keeping your head straight and not letting the pressure get to you but we’re showing no signs of cracking and there’s a good atmosphere at The Valley.
I made my debut at Brentford the previous week after arriving on loan and that was my first proper game for a while. I’d played a few reserve matches at QPR but I wasn’t in their 25-man squad, so I wanted to come to a club where the staff would get the best out of me and get me working.
There were a couple of clubs interested, some of which were in the Championship but I wanted to choose carefully.
I sat down with my agent and he named some clubs but none of them felt right.
I didn’t want to go just anywhere and then I thought of Charlton and assistant manager Alex Dyer and manager Chris Powell, with whom I worked at West Ham.
My agent called them and they were interested, so that was great to know and I’m not regretting the move at all.
Knowing them already has helped me to settle in and the training by Alex and first-team coach Damian Matthew has been superb.
The club has made a great start to the season and now it’s up to us to carry on in the same vein.
I’ve got a weekend off on Saturday because I can’t play in the FA Cup but we want to keep our momentum going against Carlisle and make sure we’re still in winning form when the league campaign resumes at Walsall.
