A radical scheme will see residents at a new garden city given Fitbits for a year.

Developers at Ebbsfleet Garden City will then monitor how they exercise - then the information gathered will help them decide which parks, green spaces and leisure facilities to build.

The idea behind the project, which will see up to 100 people given the tech, is to track the types of exercise they are taking part in.

The facilities built as a result will service up to 15,000 new homes, with a workforce of up to 30,000 people.

Ebbsfleet Garden City is one of 10 demonstrator sites in the NHS England Healthy New Town Programme.

Director of Ebbsfleet Garden City Healthy New Town programme Kevin McGeough said: "We hope that by wearing the device, it will motivate people to be fit and active and having a healthier population will help cut down the demands made on the NHS.

"We’ve had no shortage of volunteers who have told us that not only do they want to get fit or stay fit and healthy, but also want to be part of an exciting initiative that also shapes the future of Ebbsfleet Garden City.

"Volunteers are also keen to get to know each other and to form support networks that help to sustain their activity whilst also getting to know their new or existing neighbours."
