A grammar school has surpassed its previous good performance by being judged outstanding in every category.

Dartford Grammar School for Girls in Shepherds Lane was visited by a team of six Ofsted inspectors, led by Dr Simon Hughes.

They agreed on the school topping expectations across five categories, including effectiveness of leadership and management, teaching, pupil performance and behaviour. The pastoral care was particularly impressive.

In his report, Dr Hughes noted that the school “has a justifiably strong local reputation for pastoral welfare and academic excellence”.

He added: “Issues are dealt with quickly and well.

“Pupils are taught to respect themselves and build their own sense of self-worth.

“The school is an inspiringly cohesive and culturally integrated community.”

The teaching was described as being exceptionally strong, with pupils’ results being outstanding.

Dr Hughes continued: “The head teacher has very high expectations for everyone. She leads purposefully. Her commitment to the pupils is clearly seen.”

The school leaders were described as business-like and efficient, with governors challenging the school rigorously.

As well as a traditional academic curriculum, the school was also encouraging in creative disciplines, including art, dance, drama and music, with artwork proudly displayed around the school.

Head teacher Sharon Pritchard was delighted with the result, and said: “There are many wonderful comments in the report and I would particularly like to highlight what has been written about our students and staff.

“I am very proud indeed of our school community.”

To improve further, the inspection team said the school should try to get more pupils achieving the highest A grades, and challenge them earlier on in the syllabus to broaden their knowledge.
