The main feature on Saturday night’s card is the £500 final of the Owners Bonus Series race for Grade A8 dogs that had not won a race prior to entry into this event.

The 12 entrants ran in two heats last weekend with the first three in each going through to Saturday’s final.

Given that this competition is for “maidens” – dogs that are yet to win a race – it was always going to be the case that the participants would be newcomers and that most would still have their puppy status.

The 12 had only had 60 races collectively to date with four of the participants making their race debuts in the heats. So two have now broken their “duck” having won the heats and they were Rosary Beads and Old Father Time trained by Jean Liles and Patsy Cusack respectively.

Amazingly, both winners recorded exactly the same win time of 24.24 seconds for the 380m.

Rosary Beads’ chances this weekend will largely depend on him getting a fast start and taking command early on. He is still obviously very green and his fastest time to date which came in trials here was 24.20 seconds which may not be fast enough to win this final.

Old Father Time is a dog who usually only seems to just do enough in his races and whilst it looks as if he always has more petrol in the tank, it is a case of whether he is going to use it or not.

I believe our winner may well come from one of the other four finalists. They are Ballycannon Jean, Good Poet, Sparkle Bluebell and Tullovin Whisper.

All four have a little more experience on their side and this will now come into play.

It is a tricky one to call but I can only go on the form to date and, of course, the clock.

So I will go for Good Poet with the hope that he gets a better trap draw than in the heats.

There were no designated “wide” runners in either heat and he got the short straw running out of trap six but hopefully will be luckier in this week’s trap draw.

Unfortunately, he is somewhat indifferent with his trapping, as his previous eight races reflect but he is to me the fastest dog and with any sort of level break he should show the others a clean pair of paws.
