Two men have been treated for smoke inhalation after a fire in their home is believed to have started due to a faulty extension plug.

The block of multi-plugs was covered by clothing which also caught fire in the home on Wakefield Road in Greenhithe.

It is thought part of a dress hanging on an ironing board had covered the plug.

The alarm was raised at around 12.30pm yesterday thanks to a working smoke alarm on the upstairs landing.

When firefighters arrived at the property, they found two men in their 50s experiencing breathing difficulties.

They were given oxygen, and placed in the care of South East Coast Ambulance Service paramedics.

There were no other reported injuries.

Two fire engines attended the scene.

The fire, which was in the front bedroom, was tackled by crews using breathing apparatus, a positive pressure ventilation fan and hose reel jets.

Firefighters are encouraging people to think about making sure any electrical items likes plugs, sockets and appliances are free from any time of fabric cover and are checked regularly for signs of wear and tear that could eventually lead to a fire.

They also warned people to make sure items of clothing are not placed where they could fall onto appliances.
