Vehicle fire causes M20 delays between J1 and J2 near Swanley

All lanes have now re-opened on the M20 after a crane lorry fire.

Drivers travelling coastbound this evening were facing delays between Junction 1 for the Swanley Interchange and Junction 2 for Wrotham.

Traffic had been halted in both directions and this was later reduced to one lane closed to allow for the recovery operation.

KCC Highways warned drivers to approach with caution and expect delays approaching the hard shoulder.

Four fire engines attended the incident with its crews wearing breathing apparatus and were able to extinguish the crane lorry fire at around 3.45pm.

No injuries have been reported.

An off-duty Met Police inspector also aided in the evacuation.

The police have been approached for comment.

Recovery was on the scene at 9pm. With lane one (of three) closed for recovery and clean up.
