Blancpain GT Series bosses want to return to Brands Hatch after a capacity grid packed out the West Kingsdown circuit at the weekend.

The entry list for Sunday’s prestigious Sprint Cup round – which featured supercars including McLarens and Bentleys – totalled 37 cars, almost doubling last season’s turnout.

Series boss Stephane Ratel, who first brought his championship to Kent in 2014, was pleased to return to the sweeping 2.4-mile Grand Prix circuit.

He said: “It is a good date, it’s a good one for Britain and we intend to come back.

“It has worked very well – we consider it as one of our very best Sprint events and everybody loves the track.”

Ratel, who is founder and CEO of the organising SRO Motorsports Group, also oversees the domestic British GT Championship, which visited Brands last month.

All 37 garages were filled at the weekend, with a temporary tent installed near the pit lane entry to accommodate a Ferrari and Lamborghini.

Ratel added: “It is very nice, we love it here.

“It offers spectacular racing and we are happy – it is a popular destination for our championship.”

Audi R8 driver Franck Perera claimed pole position on Saturday, topping the timesheets ahead of two HTP Motorsport-prepared Mercedes machines.

Perera and teammate Marlon Stockinger were beaten to the qualifying race spoils on Sunday by Mercedes pair Jules Szymkowiak and Bernd Schneider.

The Szymkowiak and Schneider duo started the main race from pole, but could only chase Christopher Mies and Enzo Ide to the flag in their Audi R8.

Mies and Ide held on to win by 0.658 seconds, beating their Mercedes rivals after an hour of racing following a late safety car period.
