Dartford manager Tony Burman says Darts should have beaten Dover in FA Trophy first round tie

Disappointed Tony Burman claims Dartford 'should have finished Dover off' and face a tougher task to progress from their FA Trophy replay at Crabble.

Darts bossed much of the second half in their first round tie but only had Ronnie Vint's close-range goal to show for it as the game at Princes Park finished 1-1 to secure a return date in Dover on Tuesday.

Manager Burman admitted: "I thought the first 20 minutes Dover came at us and they had more chances. I was disappointed with the goal they got from our point of view because we didn't clear the ball.

"But for 88 minutes we've kept their front-line, three great players, at bay. In the second half we did it even better."

He added: "After half-time I think we were the only team that looked like we were going to win it and we haven't punished them.

"We didn't have loads of chances, you don't when you play against Dover, but the chances we did have were scoreable. We should have done better with those opportunities, but it wasn't to be.

"It's disappointing we haven't come away with a win."

Burman admitted the second game on the road will be a different, tougher, proposition.

He said: "The Trophy is very important but obviously neither team wants a replay. That's when it starts to interfere with your league fixtures.

"Nevertheless we go there Tuesday night and start again. We know what Dover are like now. We know it's going to be difficult but we'll go there and try to win the game.

"It would take a hell of a lot of determination, attitude and people doing their jobs right (to win there). We nearly pulled it off on Saturday.

"Dover are very rigid in the way they play. I felt we needed to change our system to go 4-2-3-1. It was working. I think we've done ok and in all fairness should have finished the game off in the second half.

"It's tough, playing away, it's a big pitch, but we'll enjoy ourselves and if we can be as organised as we were on Saturday, other than their goal, then I'll be happy and I'm sure we'll put in a good performance. We'll give it a go.

"We got a decent result against a decent side but we move on and hopefully Tuesday brings us more luck."

Tom Gardiner and Andy Pugh were forced off through injury and Burman admitted: "It's a little bit bare bones at the minute, we'll have to assess them to see how they are for Tuesday."

Darts and Dover will be in the draw for the second round on Monday lunchtime. Draw details will appear on KentOnline.
