Dartford want to sign up to five more players before the season starts in two months' time.
Centre-half Callum McNaughton and striker George Sykes joined the club last week but there is still plenty of business for manager Tony Burman to do before the Vanarama National League South opener on August 8.
He said: "You have to be patient. That's the name of the game.
"Gone are the days when you had your squad done and dusted before you turned up for pre-season. It would be nice to have that luxury but it isn't happening so much any more.
"To get the first two is good and there are at least one or two, maybe four or five more to follow. That will happen but it takes a little bit of time and patience.
"You have to wait but hopefully we'll get the answers we want.
"We've got 13 players now and I'm looking at having 16 to 18 players in the squad.
"Left-back is an area we've got to fill and we're trying to do that at the moment. We might need a back-up goalkeeper as well so they're the positions we'll be looking into.
"We still need at least three players and maybe four or five."
Burman explained why he wanted to bring McNaughton and Sykes to Princes Park.
He said: "Callum was someone I nearly took on loan last year. He progressed with West Ham and Bishop’s Stortford and he had the experience of winning Conference South with Bromley which was one of the things I wanted.
"I want players who have been successful and been involved with teams who have won things. He’s a good age and he’s come here to play in the centre-half position.
"Hopefully he’ll progress and be a good player for us for years to come.
"George was at Barnet, he played a couple of games for their first team and he went out on loan. I tried to sign him two years ago but he’s seen what it’s like in non-league.
"I was impressed with his attitude, the way he is and I’m hoping he’s got the hunger to get back into League football – I hope the pair of them have got that.
"He’s a big lad, he’s got the height but I’m not sure if he’s got the strength yet so hopefully we can develop that."
