Skipper Sam Corne led by example with a stunning 87th-minute equaliser for Welling against Tranmere on Saturday.

The Wings ended a run of three straight defeats in Vanarama National League when Corne let fly from 25 yards.

His tremendous strike received nationwide exposure with the game televised live on BT Sport, although ironically they failed to broadcast the goal live after zooming on on Welling co-owner Barrie Hobbins at the time.

It was no more than Welling deserved against Tranmere, who ended the game with 10 men following a red card for Ritchie Sutton with 18 minutes remaining.

Television replays proved inconclusive as Sutton was penalised by the assistant referee for an off the ball incident with Wings striker Sahr Kabba.

Kabba was restored to the starting line-up for the first time since the second game of the season.

Although Tranmere dominated early possession, it was Welling that had the better chances. Xavier Vidal and Reece Harris combined to send Kabba clear but keeper Scott Davies was out smartly to block his shot.

Welling then had strong appeals for a penalty turned down as Harris' shot was blocked by a raised arm, before Corne saw his shot from the rebound cleared to safety.

Corne was caught in possession moments later but Tranmere failed to take advantage as Andy Mangan's shot was deflected wide for a corner.

Tranmere keeper Davies and Matt Hill then collided nine minutes before the break but Vidal was unable to take advantage, his long-range effort being deflected off target.

After a sluggish first half for a club who were playing League 1 football just two seasons ago, Tranmere came out all guns blazing in the second half and it had an immediate impact.

Wings keeper Tom King got nowhere near Liam Ridehaigh's corner and Lois Maynard was first to react to nod the ball home from close range.

Kabba had another good opportunity snuffed out as Tranmere struggled to cope against his pace while Kevin Lokko's header from Harry Lee's corner was cleared off the line by Jay Harris.

When when Tranmere went down to 10 men, Welling then seemed to lose their way. A double substitution even failed to inspire the Wings until Corne came up trumps.

Once level, Corne nearly repeated the trick in the 89th minute but his long range strike was deflected just wide of the upright.
