Dartford manager Alan Dowson wants two keepers to fight it out for the coming season.

The Darts boss has offered deals to both goalkeepers who finished last season at Princes Park - Dan Wilks and Reice Charles-Cook.

Player-of-the-year Wilks made 39 appearances while Charles-Cook came in for six matches at the end of the campaign.

“I’m talking to the two goalkeepers so I should know by this week,” said Dowson.

“Wilks wanted the weekend to think about it, that’s fine. Cook has just come back from international duty so we’ll find out about that.

“I want to have both, I’ve offered them both deals. I’ve said to them both that there’s no such thing as being number one. You’ve got to have two keepers vying for one position.

“I want both of them to come back fighting like they did last year to make sure they are number one, that’s the bottom line.

“Both keepers think they should be number one but I might not get either of them if they decide to go elsewhere.

“If the two goalkeepers turn me down then we’ll get another two in.”

Charles-Cook played for Grenada against El Salvador while he was an unused substitute in the return match as well as the 5-0 loss to USA at the weekend.

Dowson is expected to appoint a goalkeeping coach next week.

The Darts boss has agreed deals with Luke Allen, Samir Carruthers, Kristian Campbell, Cameron Brodie and Dan Roberts in addition to centre-backs Tom Bonner and Connor Essam.

It’s been a busy first week in the hotseat and Dowson wants the remaining members of last season’s squad to make their minds up this week if they want to stay or leave the club.

“There’s no good a player coming to me and saying I’ve had this offer from somewhere else, whether it’s Welling or Bromley or wherever, I can’t do much about it,” added the Darts manager.

“What they’ve been offered elsewhere is not my problem.

“I’m just saying what is a fair deal for this football club so I might have lost one or two that way I think.

“There’s going to be stacks of players that become available who haven’t got clubs, who haven’t got what they wanted and they will come down to our level, that’s the way it is and it’s always been the same.

“I’ve got to hold my nerve. It’s important that I got the two centre-halves that I wanted.

“There’s a few that I haven’t heard from and there’s others who have signed for other clubs but I can’t do anything about that as I was late in the job. They wanted to tie themselves up quickly which is fair enough.

“It’s a two-way thing. We’ve had our first set of chats and I think it’s fair that I talk to everybody, even if it’s to say thanks for what you’ve done.

“The bottom line is we’ve got to be fair to them and they’ve got to be fair to us. If they want to move on, that’s fine - that’s life.

“A lot of people thought they would leave and they haven’t. It’s been a hectic week and it’s flown by, I’m delighted to have got the ones we have at the minute.”
