Welling manager Loui Fazakerley hailed his team's character after their midweek win over Lincoln City.

The Wings were on the backfoot for long periods against a direct Lincoln outfit but claimed three points thanks to substitute Afolabi Obafemi's late winner.

It may have been harsh on the visitors, who suffered a third straight defeat at Park View Road in as many years, but Fazakerley wasn't about to complain.

"It wasn't the best performance but it was great character shown from the lads," said the Wings boss.

"We had to play well defensively because Rhead has caused many a defence problems this season. We knew what to expect, we knew they be long and direct and they didn't disappoint.

"The performance wasn't the most important thing, it was all about the result. In the past we've played well and lost."

With Harry Osborne losing his appeal against his red card picked up at Boreham Wood, Welling had to draft in Michael Chambers alongside the outstanding Kevin Lokko.

"Michael had a fitness test before the game and gave us the green light," said Fazakerley.

"Kevin Lokko and Michael Chambers showed great character and battling spirit.

"You could say we led a charmed life at times. They were always going to play long, direct balls into Rhead but we managed to deal with it."

Fazakerley also praised match-winner Obafemi, who tucked away his goal with a classy finish.

It was only his second goal in a Wings shirt but proved enough to snatch all three points.

"Character is a word we've used a lot and Afolabi showed plenty of that," said Fazakerley.

"He has been in and out of the side and hasn't played as much as he would like but he showed great character to come off the bench and produce a good, composed finish.

"We see it in training, we know he can do it but he hasn't scored as many as he would like or had the chances so far to show what he can do."
