Saturday evening’s card features the final of The Owner's Bonus race for grade A3 greyhounds, with the winner collecting £500.
The two semi-finals for this event were run on last weekend’s card and this looks like being a competitive final after the winners of the semis recorded times of 23.89 and 23.90sec respectively.
The semis were won by Bignian View and Indigo Joker, trained by Paul Tompsett and Gemma Davidson and in each semi, the dogs which also qualified for the final were no more than one-and-three-quarter lengths behind the winner.
Bignian was followed home by Rosary Beads and Lynton Beauty in the first semi and in these three, we have a total of 269 competitive races.
In contrast, the second semi-final saw Indigo Joker home followed by Croggan Man and Johnny Quick who are all relatively new dogs here. Their combined races number
36 competitive events.
So will it be experience or youth that will prevail when the six go to traps?
The first question must be where will the early pace come from? This will play a big part in who lifts the winner’s prize and the dog that can gain the lead around the first two bends will have every chance of staying on to win.
Bignian View is generally a fast trapper, as is Indigo Joker, and both recorded the fastest sectional times in their semis – proving the point that you have to lead in the race.
While the other four greyhounds are capable of the odd fast exit, they are not as consistent as these two in early pace.
Having said that, if they go to the bend in a line, then fate may well play a
part. The beneficiary of any crowding and bumping may go on to win, such is the closeness of all six dogs’ general form.
It is a difficult one to call but the bookmakers sent Johnny Quick off as a short-priced favourite in his semi but to my mind he was beaten fair and square into third, so I can’t see a reversal of form happening.
I would like to see one of the old timers win the final. They are nearing retirement and this would be a just reward for one of them for their service.
I am going to shout Bignian View on and hope that he can show enough early pace.
