Two first-half goals proved decisive as Welling's long wait for a win continued in National League on Saturday.
The Wings produced their best performance to date under new boss Dean Frost but were unable to convert that into points against play-off chasing Wrexham.
The visitors' second goal was certainly covered in controversy as a soft penalty was put away by Connor Jennings, who was lucky to still be on the pitch at that stage.
Welling clearly adopted a shoot on sight policy and got off to a promising start with four attempts at goal in the first seven minutes.
Keeper Rhys Taylor had to be on form to beat away shots from Ade Yusuff and Harry Lee.
Jamal Fyfield somehow escaped a booking for tripping Yusuff as he surged into the penalty area. Kadell Daniel curled the free-kick wide.
Wrexham hardly had a sniff in the opening half-hour but took the lead on 33 minutes when Lee Fowler tapped in from close range.
On 36 minutes, Jennings - who escaped a yellow card for a blatant dive - was booked for a pull back on James Ferry.
Referee Alan Young rubbed salt into Welling's wounds by awarding a soft penalty for a foul on Rob Evans by Gayle. Jennings promptly drove home the spot-kick to make it 2-0 on 44 minutes.
Welling had an uphill task after the break and, if anything, it was Wrexham who looked more likely to add to their target.
The attacking flair shown by the Wings in the first half was not in evident and they came up well short in the end.
Blaine Hudson was denied a goal on his return to Park View Road by a fine Rodak save before Jackson fired against the upright.
Welling rallied at the end but substitute Tomi Adeloye failed to get his shot away and James Ferry fired over after ghosting in to meet Noah Chesmain's deep cross.
Welling: Rodak, Chesmain, Chambers, Lee (Nortey 90mins), Wanadio, Gayle, Ferry, Harris, Williams, Yusuff (Kabba 69mins), Daniel (Adeloye 61mins). Subs not used: McEntegart, Lokko. Attendance: 620.
