Welling’s hopes of avoiding the drop in Vanarama Conference were dealt a big blow as they suffered a seventh straight defeat on Saturday, going down 1-0 at fellow strugglers Nuneaton.

Jody Brown’s side are now winless in nine games and only out of the relegation zone on goal difference, having played a game more than two of the sides chasing them.

The first half saw few chances created at either end, with Wings keeper Jonathan Henly only called into serious action on one occasion when he tipped over a fizzing shot from Elliott Whitehouse.

The crucial breakthrough arrived just five minutes into the second-half when Andy Walker fired a low shot past Henley from 18 yards.

From then on it was the hosts who looked likelier to add to their tally, although Anthony Jeffrey did draw a save from keeper Max Crocombe after cutting inside and in the closing stages Karl Duguid and Jamal Fyfield had attempts which deflected wide.

Henley himself even ventured forward for a flurry of late set-pieces to add an aerial threat, however he could not prevent Nuneaton making it three games unbeaten and pulling within three points of United, though having played a game more.
