Dartford finding perfect balance in midfield with Jordan Wynter thriving upon return to the engine room

Jordan Wynter is back in his favourite position - and it’s showing with his level of performance.

The Dartford utility man has been deployed in a holding midfield role rather than right-back of late, a switch which has coincided with the club’s amazing run of form.

“I love it,” said Wynter. “It’s no secret that I prefer playing in midfield. I want to play games so if I get put at right-back, I’m still going to try my best but my preferred position is always midfield.

“I’m a disciplined midfielder who likes to get the ball and give it to other people to express themselves.

"Being a presence in midfield is important for any football team so I feel that position is for me. It allows the other boys to go and attack.

“I’m not joining in the attacks as such but I’m communicating with both the forwards and the defenders behind me.

“At right-back, I’m talking to the centre-halves and my right-winger, and trying my best to get forward, but that’s not something that is naturally my game.”

Wynter has provided the perfect balance in Dartford’s midfield.

He’s now featuring alongside loan duo Josh Johnson and Jack Smith, who both like to drive forward and get into the box.

“They’ve both done well since they’ve come in and have grown into their roles in midfield,” reflected Wynter.

“Smudger has been here for a handful of games and personally I feel he has grown in confidence as each game has gone on.

"JJ came in at St Albans and you could see he has a bit about him, and what an asset he will be for the team.

“I feel we’ve got a good balance in there, even if they don’t play we’ve got the likes of Luke Allen, Keiran Murtagh or Samir Carruthers. We understand how the manager wants us to play now.”

Wynter was certainly up for the battle against Welling as Dartford ran out 5-1 winners on Tuesday night.

The Darts scored twice from set-pieces in the first half, and Wynter revealed that was no fluke.

“We did have a look at some of their set-plays in prior games and we knew that was a weakness of theirs so it was something we wanted to capitalise on,” he said.

“We knew it was a derby, it was going to be intense and the crowd would be lively. It’s always a battle against Welling.

“We started the game off well, we got our goals early and the momentum carried us through the game.

“It was the best game that we’ve played this season, hopefully we can push on from here and stay consistent with our performances.”
