A2 closure at Jubilee Way in Dover to last for five weeks from today
00:01, 09 September 2013
Drivers are warned to expect delays on the A2 in Dover today as the London-bound carriageway is due to be closed for five weeks.
The closure had not been put in place by early this afternoon, but closure signs, bollards and diversion signs were in place ready.
And there has already been an incident on one of the diversion routes. A lorry has jack-knifed on Castle Hill Road, outside Dover Castle. The road was closed for about half-an-hour.
The Highways Agency is shutting the stretch at Jubilee Way, over Eastern Docks, while maintenance work is carried out.
The coast-bound carriageway will also be closed overnight and on Sundays as a bridge refurbishment scheme moves into the next phase.
Diversions are in place with the London-bound carriageway due to be reopened on Monday, October 14.
The coast-bound carriageway will close between 8pm and 6am from Monday to Saturday and on Sundays.
Bala Vishnubala, from the Highways Agency, said: "We have been progressing well with the concrete repairs over the last few weeks, with no impact to road users.
"The next phase involves more work on the bridge itself; we have planned the work to keep one lane open to coast-bound traffic.
"I would encourage anyone who would normally use the A2 Jubilee Way to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra time."
A diversion will be in place via the A20 and A256. Long distance traffic is advised to consider using the A20/M20 as an alternative.
The first phase of the work started on Monday, August 5 with repairs to the concrete underneath the structure.
