A flypast by a Dakota from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight had to be cancelled because of the unseasonably wet and windy weather which greeted the Armed Forces weekend at Pencester Gardens in Dover.

The flypast was to have been one of the highlights of the two-day event, and it would have been the first time that a flypast had taken place as part of the programme.

But the low cloud, rain and squally wind meant that the plane could not take off to fly over the gardens.

Dover Mayor Cllr Ronnie Philpott was among those who braved the weather to support the event.

The organisers did not let the weather dampen their spirits however, and the rest of the weekend's activities went ahead as planned. The numbers attending were affected on Saturday, but Sunday's sunshine brought out more people.

Bands, a traditional NAAFI canteen, sideshows, a rifle range and a range of entertainment helped make the weekend go with a swing, and visitors were also able to inspect some war-time vehicles that were on display.

The event was raising money for Help For Heroes.
