Call for more on-call firefighters in Deal
00:04, 22 April 2014
Deal Fire Station is running a recruitment evening tonight, offering would-be candidates the chance to find out about the role of an on-call firefighter.
Potential recruits are invited to the station in London Road at 6.30pm.
Watch manager Malcolm Cowie said: “There is sometimes a bit of a stereotype of who can be an on-call firefighter and we want to challenge that.”
“This could be a great job for all kinds of people so if anyone is looking for extra shifts, or perhaps an additional challenge over and above the day job, I would encourage them to come along and see if this could be for them.”
On-call firefighters are paid to be available for an agreed number of hours and during that time they can go about their normal life.
Spokesman Alan Bradford said: “If they are called, they must be able to drop
what they are doing and be operationally ready within five minutes.”
The contracted hours offered will be based on what the station needs but is likely to be for day and weekend cover.
Requirements include being over 18, physically fit, with good levels of reading and writing.
Candidates must live within five minutes of the station. Full training is provided. For more information visit: www.kentfirejobs.info.
