Police in Dover have launched an operation targeting cyclists
who are putting pedestrians at risk by riding their bikes through
the precinct.

Police officers, police community support officers and trainee
officers were in the town centre on Tuesday warning cyclists that
they could face a penalty if they continue to break the law.

Town centre police officer PC Ashley Price said there had been a
number of incidents in which pedestrians had complained about
cyclists weaving in and out in the Biggin Street and Cannon Street
precincts, as well as the Market Square and the subway under
Townwall Street.

“In one incident a woman was hit by one of these bikes and
suffered an injury to her leg,” said PC Price.

“She had to go to hospital and have stitches inserted in a
severe cut.

“Riding on paths puts pedestrians, especially older people, at
risk of being knocked down and injured, and together with the
district council, we take this issue very seriously.

“Cycling on footpaths is punishable by a £30 fixed penalty
notice. We are arranging for more signs to be put up, telling
cyclists they cannot ride through the area, and we will then go
into the enforcement stage, where cyclists will be given fixed
penalties.”
