The mother of a keen cyclist killed after a crash in a village near Deal wants to become a figurehead in a campaign to get more respect from drivers.

Tracy Squire said cyclists are treated like the "scum of the earth" by some motorists, but on the continent they are given plenty of consideration.

Her 18-year-old son Daniel Squire died on Sunday, September 8 after a crash with a van on the A258 at Ringwould.

He had been cycling to Deal on his new bike to meet his father Symon and fellow Deal Tri members for a bike ride.

Mrs Squire, who lives in Reach Close, St Margaret's, near Dover, said she wants to appear on chat shows and any other public medium as a way of promoting respect for cyclists and preventing more deaths.

She said: "I have even emailed Bradley Wiggins and Chris Hoy asking them to back me.

"Because their Olympic success has made cycling big in England.

"I’m really passionate about it. I have to be, to keep Daniel's memory alive."

Mrs Squire and her ex-husband Symon made the decision to donate Daniel's organs when they were told he would not survive his injuries.

They knew his heart was in top condition because he was a keen athlete.

Mrs Squire said: "I want to become an advocate for organ donation as well. Because of that, Daniel's heart is still beating somewhere."

The argument over if the A258 between Dover and Deal is safe has been a persistent one.

Mrs Squire also wants to campaign for work to be done on the road, such as cutting back trees and the installation of speed bumps and cameras.

Daniel went to St Mary's Primary School and St Edmund's Catholic School in Dover. He worked as a logistics operative at London Fancy Box in Dover.
