Babies across the district ‘latched on’ to help their mothers raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding.

More than 40 mothers, fathers, babies and children attended the Blue Pigeons pub in Worth on Saturday to take part in The Big Latch On.

The event, hosted by Deal Breastfeeding Support Group, was part of an international world record attempt, encouraging new mothers to congregate and nurse their newborns in public.

The group, which also hosted the event in 2012 and 2013, saw its biggest turn out yet with families from across the district.

During the official latch-on, mothers nursed their children for at least one minute simultaneously and were counted, with organisers hoping to beat last year’s total of 14,536 breastfeeding children, at 845 locations in 28 countries.

In Worth, 14 mothers and their children took part.

The event organiser and mother supporter at the group, Thea Anderson, said: “It was a fantastic morning.

“The sunshine was out, we had a great response and afterwards families were able to relax, enjoy a breakfast and let the children play in the wonderful garden of the venue.”
