Developer insists The Regent cinema will go ahead

Developers of the Regent Bingo Hall have given assurances that talks are ongoing for their plans to transform the landmark back to its former use as a cinema.
Despite hold-ups, developer James Wallace said his team was still committed to the project, which would create a cinema and exhibition centre and a two-level restaurant in Deal.
Mr Wallace said access rights to the side and rear of the Beach Street property are responsible for delays to the project. The developers are now waiting for a Letter of Intent from the building’s owner, Dover District Council (DDC).
In a statement to the KentOnline, Mr Wallace said: “Since our meeting with DDC on September 24, both parties have been forming a mutual agreement regarding access rights at the rear and the side of the premises.
“Such access provisions are required to make the refurbishment of the Regent a success, while at the same time adhering to building control legislation.
“In addition, we required supplementary space at the rear of the premises for storage of waste and enclosing air-conditioning plant.”
The project’s progress has slowed in recent months, prompting DDC councillor Pam Hawkins to ask what was happening.
She was assured that work on the project was ongoing by Cllr Nick Kenton at a recent full council meeting.
Mr Wallace and business partner Mark Digweed have commissioned architects Ellis Designs to design the cinema and restaurant.
He added: “We are very much committed in delivering the project.
We anticipate the build taking a 12-month period from formal planning approval.”
