Dover's Blue Square Bet South promotion push took a hit with a goalless draw at Dorchester Town on Saturday afternoon.
Whites struggled to find top gear against well-drilled opponents who created a host of chances and could have prevented Dover from taking the point which took them up to sixth in the table.
Whites needed Ross Flitney to keep the deadlock intact as they were put under pressure by their hosts early-on, the former Barnet keeper superbly blocking a header towards an unguarded net.
The hosts continued to threaten and it was not until a little over 20 minutes from time that Donovan Simmonds (pictured) curled a shot onto the bar.
Top-scorer Adam Birchall saw several chances saved by the Magpies keeper and header inches over in stoppage time as Athletic came close to securing a win they would not have deserved.
Results elsewhere were kind to the Whites who lie just a point behind fifth-placed Woking and three behind Welling in fourth, with a superior goal difference against both sides.
