Families of the 11 Royal Marines killed by the IRA in the 1989 explosion at the School of Music, Deal, were given a special welcome on Sunday to the Deal Memorial Bandstand concert on Walmer Green.

The greeting came from bandstand trust chairman Major John Perkins, from Deal, a former director of music, the band of HM Royal Marines, Portsmouth.

He described the annual visit from the Portsmouth band as an outstanding event to commemorate the bombing of the School of Music, when 11 musicians were "so tragically killed."

"I welcome the families here today and I hope this incredible turnout shows you your loved ones are not forgotten."

He also welcomed those who had lived with their injuries since that day.

About 8,000 people packed onto Walmer Green and almost three hours of top entertainment kept the crowds impressed.

There were visitors from across the world, from Japan to Canada, and the programme of music included marches, tunes from famous films and composers, as well as new compositions.

After the concert a rededication service was held and the names of the 11 musicians were read out to the crowd. Prayers were said and flowers placed at the bandstand, which is a memorial to those who died.
