Deal Area Foodbank has shut its doors today as it moves towards a home delivery service.

The vital service which operates across five sites is shifting the way it works in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Changes will also include a move in priority, with focus given to the isolated, sick and those quarantined.

It comes just days after a £2,000 fresh produce donation from Deal Pier Kitchen - the restaurant used for filming ITV's hit drama Liar.

Project co-orindator Sheila Ward said: "We have taken the decision in this current climate to change our working practices as follows.

"The needs of those who are isolated through sickness and/or quarantining are paramount, and we need to make sure that these groups receive the food they need until such time that their circumstances change.

"All five of our food banks will close immediately, and will be replaced by a home delivery service from Monday to Friday.

"All referrals at present will be screened by the Foodbank and priority will be given to the above groups who are most vulnerable.

"We are not here to provide a delivery service for those who do not want to go shopping, but we are here for the most vulnerable groups, and we hope this message is clearly understood."

She is asking families in need to make their money stretch as far as possible and to be sensible.

The charity had recently received a huge donation from a prime restaurant, which included 70 litres of milk, more than 500 eggs and sacks of potatoes.

Deal Pier Kitchen emptied its larder on Saturday following the government's order to close pubs and restaurants.

Proprietor Tim Biggs, whose 15 employees are unable to work, said: "We wanted to support the most vulnerable during this time and we were fortunately placed to do that with Deal Foodbank."

An overwhelmed Ms Ward reacted: "Their donation was absolutely invaluable."

Others like Starbucks and The Postroom café also followed suit, but while donations are down and demand soars, more food is needed, like UHT Milk.
