Highs and lows of GSCE results were experienced on Tuesday when pupils visited schools to pick up their grades.

Castle Community College children were celebrating along with other schools in the Deal and Sandwich areas.

Christine Chapman, head teacher of the Deal college, said: "There have been some absolutely remarkable results from our current Year 11, with many happy faces and smiles all round."

Among the delighted pupils was Paris Yilmaz, who gained 14 GCSEs, who immediately phoned her friends to share her good news.

Gasps of joy and elated telephone calls home followed when pupils at Sir Roger Manwood's School received their GCSE results.

Head teacher Chris Morgan reported another year of outstanding results, with new records being set.

Fifty four per cent of all the exams taken were passed at the top grades of A* and A with 23 students passing all their subjects within that bracket.

And 18 pupils passed nearly all subjects with straight A*s.

"It is very pleasing to see the hard work of the students and their teachers rewarded in this way," he said.

The overall pass rate A* to C was very high at 95 per cent and the average points score per candidate at 542 is a new record for the school.This equates to an average of more than 10 grade A passes per student
