Yobs ran riot on a golf course causing more than £1,000 worth of damage.

While a huge percentage of the population remain isolated in their homes amid the coronavirus crisis, criminals are reported to have targeted Walmer and Kingsdown Golf Club near Deal, overnight.

They broke into the clubhouse before driving across the course leaving tyre marks in their tracks.

They also set upon the half way hut turning taps on.

But the only item they appear to have made off with is a piece of piping - a U-bend.

Past captain and club member John Mabbs described a person visible on CCTV as a 'typical hoody', with the estimated cost of damage around £1,200.

He said: "It's a real inconvenience and for no apparent reason.

"They broke in at the club house, but although a lot of damage was caused nothing appears to have been stolen.

"We also had a car drive over the course, leaving tyre tracks which have damaged one of the fairways and the greens, and then the car was abandoned."

Mr Mabbs said the car was a black Saab.

He continued: "Then they broke into our half way hut. Nothing was stolen but they turned the taps on and took the U-bend with them!"

Mr Mabbs says it is already a busy time for the club's managers and committee members who have been holding coronavirus crisis talks.

A meeting was held just hours before this incident when it was agreed all social events would be cancelled at the club for a month.

However, the club remains open for golfers to play.

He said: "This has given us something new, other than coronavirus, to deal with."

A spokesman said: "Kent Police is investigating a report of a burglary at commercial premises in the Leas, Kingsdown, which took place between 5am and 6am on Wednesday 18 March 2020.

"Enquiries are ongoing to confirm what, if anything, was stolen.

"A vehicle was found nearby and enquiries are continuing to establish whether or not it might be linked to the burglary.

"Anyone with information regarding the burglary can call Kent Police on 01843 222289 quoting 46/49917/20."
